What are the Kidneys
The two kidneys are part of both the Urinary and Endocrine Systems. They are two of the most important internal organs in the body primarily functioning to filter blood, regulate the urinary system and produce hormones. The process by which the kidneys channel pollutants and chemicals out of our systems by filtering toxic and potentially toxic chemicals from the bloodstream produces urine that carries waste materials from the body. The kidneys maintain a stable chemical balance and internal physical environment for cells by regulating water, electrolyte and acid base balances in the body.

As the primary removal site for potentially toxic and toxic chemicals each kidney contains 1.2 million filtering units. In a process called filtration, blood containing waste products enter the kidneys where the cells extract the water and waste products as urine. Blood flows into a network of capillaries where substances that the body still needs such as water and certain salts are restored to the blood. The purified blood is then returned to general circulation throughout the body, and waste in the form of urine passes through the ureter into the bladder. Astonishingly the kidneys can filter 500 litres of blood daily most all of which is reabsorbed returning to the bloodstream.

Kidney Stones

Besides the heart, the kidneys may be the most abused of our organs. The consumption of bad water and wrong foods overwhelms the kidneys with inorganic lime and minerals that clog the millions of filtering cells. Stones in the kidneys can be the root problems to many of the body’s ills.
Crystals form in urine from various salts that build up on the inner surfaces of the kidney. Eventually these crystals become large enough to form stones in the kidneys (called nephrolithiasis).

Such salts may include calcium oxalate, uric acid, cystine, or xanthine. These salts can become extremely concentrated under certain circumstances: if the volume of urine is significantly reduced (chronic thirst and dehydration); or if abnormally high amounts of crystal-forming salts are present (infection). When concentration levels reach the point at which the salts no longer dissolve, they precipitate out and form crystals.

Stones may also form in the ureter or the bladder. The salts that form these stones are made up of combinations of minerals and other chemicals, some of which are derived from a person's diet. Some crystals may be made when you eat too much phosphate. Phosphate levels are high in meats, breads, cereals, pastas, and carbonated drinks.

Stones begin as tiny crystals, much too tiny to be seen by X- ray. They get deposited in the tiny tubules that make up the kidney, partly blocking the flow of liquid. This leads to “water holding” (edema) in your tissues. As more crystals are formed, they begin to deposit in other organs, too, such as joints of feet and hands and the interior of arteries, causing hardening. The usual symptoms are low back pain, pain running down the leg, foot pain, hand pain and gout. Oxalic acid crystals cause pain in the lower back. Uric acid causes pain in the toes. The phosphates cause pain in the other joints (arthritis). But crystals do not cause pain by themselves. Bacteria find these nutritious deposits, and ultimately, it is they and their refuse that cause pain. By causing partial blockage, these deposits prevent heavy metals from passing out through the kidneys. Mercury and nickel from tooth fillings are constantly being excreted through the kidney tubules. But as the kidneys get older and the deluge of toxic compounds gets higher, the toxins just attach themselves to the deposits already there. Soon, a pile-up of toxins occurs in the kidney. It is fair to say that we all develop kidney stones; although they may remain very tiny and cause no pain.
